Where we deliver

Bulk deliveries have a 2 yard minimum, and one truck carries up to 6 yards. Outside these towns? Call either store — we may still be able to help.

What compost does

Compost feeds the soil life that feeds your plants. Worked into existing beds it loosens heavy clay, helps sandy soil hold water, and adds slow, steady nutrients. Spread thinly on a lawn in fall, it thickens the turf without chemical fertilizer.

How to use it

  • Existing beds: spread 1 to 2 inches each spring and work it into the top few inches, or leave it on top under your mulch.
  • Vegetable gardens: add 1 to 2 inches each year before planting.
  • Lawns: top-dress with about a quarter inch in fall and rake it in.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between compost and planting mix?

Compost is decomposed organic matter for improving soil you already have. Planting mix is loam blended with compost, made to fill new beds and raised beds.

How much compost do I need?

One yard covers about 160 square feet at 2 inches deep — about right for a year’s top-dressing on a large garden.

Can I plant straight into compost?

Not on its own — mix it into soil. For a bed that starts from nothing, order planting mix instead.

Is bagged compost the same?

Our bagged composts (Coast of Maine and others) are handy for small jobs; bulk is cheaper by the yard for big ones.
