Trees shade the house, screen views and anchor a landscape for decades, so choose for the space they’ll fill in 20 years. We carry shade, flowering and evergreen trees suited to southern Maine.
We carry these at both stores — they just aren’t in our online catalog yet. Please call South Portland or Westbrook for what’s in today.
How to choose
- Mature size: check height and spread against power lines, the house and the neighbors.
- Light and soil: most trees want full sun; a few, like Japanese maples, prefer some shade.
- Planting: dig wide, not deep — set the root flare at soil level.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to plant a tree?
Spring and fall. Fall planting from September to mid-October is ideal because cooler air and warm soil help roots grow.
How much should I water a new tree?
About 10 gallons a week through the first two growing seasons, more in hot, dry spells.
Should I stake a new tree?
Only if it’s in a windy spot or won’t stand straight. Remove stakes after one year.
Can you deliver large trees?
Ask about delivery when you call South Portland or Westbrook.
