Vegetable and Herb Plants

Vegetable and herb starts give you a head start on Maine’s short season. Plant cool crops like lettuce and broccoli in May, and wait until early June for tomatoes, peppers, squash and basil.

We carry these at both stores — they just aren’t in our online catalog yet. Please call South Portland or Westbrook for what’s in today.

How to choose

  • Sun: vegetables need 6 to 8 hours of direct sun.
  • Timing: cool-season crops handle light frost; warm-season crops need warm nights.
  • Soil: work in compost before planting; vegetables are heavy feeders.
