Why mulch
A 2 to 3 inch layer of bark mulch keeps soil moist through dry spells, smothers most weed seedlings, and evens out soil temperature so roots don’t bake in July. As it breaks down it adds organic matter to the soil underneath.
How much to order
Measure your beds, then use the mulch calculator. One yard covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep, or about 160 square feet at 2 inches.

When is the best time to mulch?
Late spring, once the soil has warmed, and again in fall to protect roots through winter.
Should mulch touch the plants?
No — keep it an inch or two away from stems and tree trunks so bark doesn’t stay wet and rot.
How deep should mulch be?
Two to three inches on beds. Thicker layers can keep water and air from reaching roots.
Do you put mulch in the beds for me?
We dump the load where you ask — on the driveway or a tarp, clear of overhead wires. Ask the store if you need help with spreading.
