Balsam or Fraser fir?
Balsam fir is Maine’s classic Christmas tree: soft needles and the strongest Christmas scent. Fraser fir has stiffer branches that hold heavy ornaments and keeps its needles a little longer indoors. Both last through the holidays with daily watering.
Tabletop trees
Tabletop trees stand 2 to 3 feet tall — good for apartments, offices, a porch or a child’s room.
Live Christmas trees
A live potted tree spends a week or so indoors and then goes into the yard. To keep it healthy:
- Keep it inside no more than 7 to 10 days, away from heaters and fireplaces.
- Water the pot whenever the top inch of soil is dry.
- Move it to an unheated garage or porch for a few days before it goes outside.
- Dig the planting hole in November before the ground freezes, or keep the tree in a sheltered spot with mulch around the pot and plant it in spring.
Keeping a cut tree fresh
- Put the tree in water within a few hours of the fresh cut.
- Check the water every day — a fresh tree can drink a gallon a day at first.
- Keep it away from heat vents, fireplaces and woodstoves.
Frequently asked questions
How tall a tree do I need?
Measure your ceiling and leave room for the stand and the topper — for an 8-foot ceiling, a 6 to 7 foot tree fits well.
Why do you drill the trunk?
Drilling fits the tree to a pin-style stand, so it goes straight in and stands up straight without fiddling with screws.
Will you tie the tree to my car?
Yes — we carry it out and tie it to your roof for free, at both stores.
How long does a cut tree last?
Four to five weeks with a fresh cut and daily water. Fraser fir usually holds its needles a little longer than balsam.
