Blueberries, raspberries, grapes and other fruiting shrubs give you fresh harvests and seasonal color in one plant. We focus on varieties that fruit reliably in Maine.
We carry these at both stores — they just aren’t in our online catalog yet. Please call South Portland or Westbrook for what’s in today.
How to choose
- Blueberries need acidic soil and a second variety for the best crop; Patriot was developed in Maine.
- Raspberries spread — give them their own bed and a trellis.
- Sun: all fruiting shrubs fruit best in full sun.
Frequently asked questions
How many blueberry bushes should I plant?
Plant at least two different varieties for better pollination and bigger crops.
Do blueberries need special soil?
Yes, acidic soil (pH 4.5 to 5.5). Add peat and an acidifying fertilizer if your soil is neutral.
When will my berries ripen?
Most blueberries ripen in July; everbearing raspberries crop in July and again in September.
Are berry plants deer resistant?
No — deer and birds both like berries. Netting protects the crop.
